Sacrament Meeting Program

DATE: Sunday, May 31, 2009

TIME: 10:00 a.m.

DETAILS: The Bishopric has asked the Young Men to take charge of the Sacrament Meeting program on Sunday, May 31. Jamal, James, and Darius have already started preparing their talks.

LESSONS

Recap: We talked about how to give a good church talk. There are three parts to a talk—the opening, middle, and closing.

1) Opening: The opening is how you start your talk. This is where you tell the listeners what you will talk about and list the ideas you plan to cover. You should not explain how you were asked to speak or tell an irrelevant joke.

2) Middle: This is where you make your points. Three is generally good number of points to have. State each point clearly, give an example of that point, and then discuss that example. The examples can be scriptures, excerpts from conference talks, personal experiences, poems, hypothetical situations, movies, etc. A talk will be more interesting if you use interesting examples to illustrate your points.

3) Closing: The closing is how you end your talk. You should restate the main idea of your talk and bear your testimony about it. You should finish by saying, “In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.”

Upcoming: Next week we will practice our talks for the 31st and finalize our complete Sacrament Meeting program.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Aaronic Priesthood Commemoration Overnight Campout

DATE: May 15–16, 2009 (This Friday & Saturday!)

TIME: Meet at the church at 6:00 p.m. It will take 30 minutes to an hour to get to the camp site at Cedarville State Park.

DETAILS: This is a Stake-wide event to celebrate the anniversary of the restoration of the Aaronic Priesthood. There will be a campfire program on Friday night. On Saturday, the Stake will provide breakfast, followed by games until around lunch.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING: Overnight toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.), change of clothes, snacks.

WHAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO BRING (but can if you wish): Tent, sleeping bag, Saturday morning breakfast. These items will be provided.

Car Wash

DATE: The car wash has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 30, 2009. (We cancelled the car wash this last weekend because of the forecast for rain, though it ended up being a beautiful day.)

TIME: 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Sacrament Meeting Program

DATE: May 31, 2009 (two weeks from this Sunday)

TIME: 10:00 a.m.

DETAILS: The Bishopric has asked the Young Men to take charge of the Sacrament Meeting program on Sunday, May 31. We need everyone who can to give a short talk. We will also accept musical numbers or poetry readings!

LESSONS

Recap: On Sunday, David led a discussion about temptation. Everyone gets tempted, but we can overcome by listening to the Spirit and striving to keep the commandments as best we can. When we fall short and make mistakes, Christ is there to pick us up and help us be better.

Upcoming: Instead of a lesson, this week we prepare for our sacrament meeting presentation on the 31st.

This Week’s Spiritual Message

Remember the purposes of the Aaronic Priesthood as found in your Duty to God pamphlet:

• Become converted to the gospel of Jesus Christ and live its teachings.

• Serve faithfully in priesthood callings and fulfill the responsibilities of priesthood offices.

• Give meaningful service.

• Prepare and live worthily to receive the Melchizedek Priesthood and temple ordinances.

• Prepare to serve an honorable full-time mission.

• Obtain as much education as possible.

• Prepare to become a worthy husband and father.

• Give proper respect to women, girls, and children.

Try to think about these purposes as you go through the week and as we prepare for our sacrament meeting presentation in 2 weeks.

2008 Boy Scout Camp

This past week was Boy Scout Camp at Camp Saffran in Whiteford, MD. Jamal, Darius, Francis and Aaron attended the week's festivities while Maurice came up on Friday with Corey Astill. The boys worked on their Tenderfoot and Second Class ranks as well as Fingerprinting, Home Repairs and Art merit badges. They also enjoyed archery, and rifle and shotgun shooting as well as many hours in the pool.

Our ward's young men combined with the rest of the Suitland Stake to form one "troop" made up of 10 patrols.

Education kits

Our service activity last week was to prepare education kits to send to Afghanistan. We filled 30 school bags with paper, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, scissors and rulers and then shipped them to Christine Boyer, a sister in our ward who is serving in the military in Afghanistan. Christine will be able to distribute them to Afghani children who visit her medical clinic. We've all been so blessed by others' acts of kindness toward us--it was nice to be able to return the favor.

Fundraising dinner & talent show

Our scout troop recently hosted a fundraising dinner to raise money for our scout camp in June. After cooking a lot of spaghetti and preparing a lot of salad and other fixings, the young men waited tables and served a three-course meal to the 50-or-so attendees. Thanks to everyone who helped out and donated to our young men! We were able to raise half the money it will take to get the boys to camp this summer!

Touring the capitol

Last week, Scoutmaster Dave took the 11-year-old Scouts on a tour of the U.S. Capitol building and to meet Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC). They had a great afternoon learning about the capitol building, U.S. history, and U.S. government and politics. This is one smart, good-looking crew.

BoyScout Campout/First Aid merit badge

The brave men! The guys went on a Stake Boy Scout campout and woke up the following morning to earn their first merit badge: first aid. As a sidenote, the guys also had the quickest time to carry a pretend victim on a stretcher 40yds.

A special thanks to the Grover family for donating scout uniforms for all of the guys!

Mormon night at the Nationals (Sept. 21, 2007)

We had a great time at the Nationals game (v. Philly) last Friday night. We lost the game, but we had a good time eating pizza and cheering for the home team. Here are some of the picture highlights.

Rock climbing at Carderock (Aug. 4, 2007)

We had a great morning on the rock at Carderock. We set up a fun climb next to the Potomac River, Jeremy showed us the ropes, Suzanne demonstrated how the pros do it, then everybody got a few great climbs in.

This was the first time for Tennyson, Issac, and Maurice to rock climb in the great outdoors. OK, Tennyson didn't do much climbing, but he loved hanging out with the guys.

Isaac showed off the athleticism he learned as a young man in Ghana, while Jeremy held steady on belay.
And Maurice, who originally doubted his chances of making it to the top, ended up discovering a hidden talent. Call it beginners luck, or call it natural instict - Maurice displayed an uncanny ability to defy gravity.
